On 21–22 May 2026, Milan will host the Milan Percutaneous Discectomy Academy, a residential course in spine surgery training focused on lumbar mechanical percutaneous discectomy technique. The event is directed by Prof. Gianpaolo Carrafiello and Dr. Anna Maria Ierardi, two leading figures in Italian interventional radiology.

Lumbar mechanical percutaneous discectomy is a minimally invasive procedure for the treatment of lumbar disc herniation. Unlike traditional open surgery, it is performed through a small needle-sized incision under fluoroscopic guidance, allowing the specialist to remove a portion of the nucleus pulposus and relieve pressure on the affected nerve root. The procedure is typically carried out under local anaesthesia, with significantly reduced recovery times compared to conventional surgical approaches.
